Apple is set to unveil macOS 26, codenamed “Cheer,” at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9. However, the new operating system may no longer support several older Intel-based Mac models. According to sources familiar with Apple’s pre-release builds, macOS 26 will only be compatible with newer devices, signaling a continued shift toward Apple Silicon.
The models expected to support macOS 26 include the MacBook Pro (2019 and later), MacBook Air (M1 and later), iMac (2020 and later), Mac Pro (2019 and later), Mac mini (M1 and later), and all models of the Mac Studio. In contrast, the 2018 MacBook Pro, 2020 Intel-based MacBook Air, 2017 iMac Pro, and 2018 Mac mini are expected to be excluded from the update. These models were among the oldest still supported by macOS Sequoia and are now likely to be left behind.
macOS 26 will launch alongside iOS 26 and is expected to feature interface updates inspired by visionOS, along with new Apple Intelligence enhancements. This marks a continued push by Apple to align its software experience more closely with its custom hardware. The same sources that provided these compatibility details have previously offered accurate information on macOS Sequoia, Ajax LLM, Freeform Scenes, and other Apple projects, adding credibility to the reports.
With this move, Apple is signaling its intention to streamline the macOS ecosystem by phasing out support for Intel Macs in favor of its own silicon-powered lineup.
