Macron: France, UK Plan Peaceful Multinational Mission to Restore Hormuz Navigation

Paris, April 13 (QNA) – French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that France and Britain will spearhead efforts to establish a “peaceful multinational mission” to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the initiative would be strictly defensive and separate from ongoing hostilities in the region.
“In the coming days, together with the United Kingdom, we will organize a conference with those countries prepared to contribute alongside us to a peaceful multinational mission aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the strait,” Macron said.
France and the United Kingdom plan to convene a conference bringing together countries willing to participate in the initiative, which officials described as focused on safeguarding commercial shipping through the vital maritime chokepoint, a key route for global energy supplies.
Macron emphasized that the proposed mission would be “strictly defensive,” aimed at protecting maritime traffic without engaging in conflict, and would remain distinct from the parties involved in the ongoing regional confrontation.
In a post on X, Macron said the move forms part of broader diplomatic efforts to address escalating tensions in the Middle East and ensure long-term regional stability. He added that the mission would be deployed “as soon as the situation allows.”
The French president also linked the initiative to wider regional concerns, including Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programs and what he described as destabilizing activities.
“No effort must be spared to swiftly achieve a solid and lasting resolution to the conflict in the Middle East through diplomatic means,” Macron said, adding that restoring free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and supporting stability in Lebanon were key priorities.
Macron reiterated that France stands ready to play a “full part” in the initiative as part of a broader push for a diplomatic resolution across West Asia.
Separately, Macron held talks on Sunday with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who told the BBC that he does not support a US plan to impose a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
US President Donald Trump said the blockade would take effect on Monday in response to Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz
