PARIS, July 25 – French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine in September. The move positions France as the first permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and the G7 to take such a step, drawing both international praise and criticism.
In a post on social media platform X, Macron stated that the decision reflects France’s historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. The announcement came ahead of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he plans to formally declare recognition.
A senior French official confirmed that other countries may soon follow, expressing hope for a broader international shift. The recognition was welcomed by Hamas as a positive development but strongly condemned by Israeli leaders. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the move rewards terrorism and paves the way for further regional instability. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar warned that it could lead to a Hamas-controlled state, citing the example of Gaza.
The United States also rejected the decision. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described it as a reckless step that strengthens Hamas propaganda and undermines peace efforts. He called it an insult to the victims of the October 7 attacks.
Macron’s move comes as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens. UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said people in Gaza now resemble walking corpses. The entire population of 2.1 million is food insecure and around 70,000 children are already showing signs of malnutrition.
France had originally planned a joint recognition summit with Saudi Arabia in June, which was delayed due to regional conflict. Macron’s decision to proceed independently reflects urgency and growing frustration over the lack of progress on the two-state solution. France hopes its action will inspire broader international recognition.
