PARIS, March 10 – French President Emmanuel Macron has called on both public and private sectors to increase investment in the development of civil nuclear energy, highlighting its importance for energy security and climate goals.

Macron made the remarks during his address at the second Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris. He emphasized that nuclear power plays a key role in achieving energy independence and sovereignty while supporting global efforts toward decarbonization and carbon neutrality by 2050. He added that the sector can also strengthen economic competitiveness and create jobs.

The French president warned that the current geopolitical situation shows how excessive dependence on hydrocarbons can become a source of pressure and instability for many countries.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, also speaking at the summit, said electricity prices in Europe remain structurally high. She noted that the ongoing Middle East crisis highlights Europe’s vulnerability as a major importer of fossil fuels.

Von der Leyen acknowledged that reducing the share of nuclear energy in Europe had been a “strategic mistake.” She announced that the European Union will provide a 200 million euro (233 million U.S. dollars) guarantee to support private investment in innovative nuclear technologies.

The second Nuclear Energy Summit brought together representatives from more than 60 countries, including heads of state, government leaders and international organizations to discuss the global development of civil nuclear energy.
