Kuala Lumpur, December 26 — Malaysia’s High Court has convicted former Prime Minister Najib Razak on all charges linked to the multibillion-ringgit 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) corruption scandal, marking a major moment in the country’s long-running legal battle over the case.
The court found Najib guilty of four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving more than 2.2 billion Malaysian ringgits. The verdict concludes over seven years of legal proceedings related to allegations that public funds were misappropriated during his time in office.
Delivering the judgment, the trial judge ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. Najib, who served as prime minister from 2009 to 2018, has denied wrongdoing throughout the trial.
He is already serving a prison sentence at Kajang Prison in a separate case linked to SRC International, a former 1MDB unit. Sentencing for the current convictions is expected to follow under Malaysian law.
