Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on the United States to take a more decisive stance in advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza, underscoring the urgent need for global powers to act against the ongoing Israeli assault. Speaking during a joint press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Monday alongside New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Anwar emphasized the significant influence the US holds in ending the violence.

“Given the lack of commitment from various countries, especially the US, which has considerable influence, there is a dire need for them to leverage that power to stop the atrocities,” Anwar stated.

His call for a stronger US intervention comes as Israel continues its military actions in Gaza, which have intensified since the October 7th attack by Hamas. Despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire, the violence has escalated, resulting in the deaths of over 40,700 Palestinians, primarily women and children, with more than 94,100 others injured, according to local health reports.

Prime Minister Luxon, who is visiting Malaysia to strengthen defense, economic, and cultural ties, echoed Anwar’s concerns. “We are united in calling for an immediate ceasefire, urging all parties to return to the negotiating table, and striving for a two-state solution,” Luxon remarked.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has drawn widespread international condemnation, with increasing calls for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in the besieged Palestinian enclave.
