Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has contributed $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration fund, signaling a potential warming of ties between the tech giant and Trump.
The donation, confirmed by Meta on Wednesday, marks a notable shift in relations, as Trump had previously criticized Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg and accused Facebook of being “anti-Trump.” This is Meta’s first such contribution to Trump’s inauguration, contrasting with the absence of donations to his 2016 fund or President Joe Biden’s 2020 fund.
Inauguration funds cover events and activities surrounding the swearing-in of a new president, but they are often viewed as efforts to build goodwill with incoming administrations.
Zuckerberg dined with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in November, following a history of tension that included Facebook and Instagram suspending Trump’s accounts after the January 6 Capitol events. Recently, Zuckerberg expressed regret to Republican lawmakers about past content moderation decisions during the pandemic, which Trump had criticized.
While Trump has softened his stance, even thanking Zuckerberg for a supportive phone call after a recent assassination attempt, the relationship remains less amicable than Trump’s ties with Elon Musk. Musk, a major Trump supporter, has taken on a prominent advisory role in the new administration.
Trump will be sworn in as the 47th U.S. president on January 20, 2025
