SALT LAKE CITY, March 24 – Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. Congress, passed away peacefully at her Utah home on Sunday at age 49, her family announced.
Love, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, represented Utah in the House of Representatives for two terms after making history with her 2014 election. She previously served as mayor of Saratoga Springs and began her political career on the city council in 2003.
Her daughter Abigale had revealed earlier this month that Love was no longer responding to treatment for glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer she was diagnosed with in 2022.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox paid tribute, calling her a “trailblazer” who inspired many with her courage and belief in the American dream.
Love often challenged party leaders, endorsing Senator Ted Cruz over Donald Trump in 2016 and later criticizing Trump for his comments about Haiti in 2018. After losing her 2018 re-election bid to Democrat Ben McAdams, Trump remarked, “Mia Love gave me no love, and she lost.”
Beyond politics, Love had a background in musical theatre and worked as a flight attendant before public service. Her final public message, written weeks before her passing, expressed gratitude and hope for America’s future.
