MIRPUR (AJK), March 19 – In a bid to discourage illicit overcharging by public transporters ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, local authorities in Mirpur conducted surprise inspections at bus and wagon stands, officials said. The operation aimed to ensure that passengers traveling to their home stations for the festival are charged fairly and treated respectfully by transport staff.
The initiative was led by Assistant Commissioner Mirpur Mian Hussam Sajid and Tehsildar/Duty Magistrate Chaudhry Imran Yousuf, accompanied by the City Police squad. The team checked fares collected from hundreds of passengers, inquiring about charges for different routes and stations to verify compliance with official fare rates.
A district administration spokesperson told APP that both the Assistant Commissioner and Tehsildar individually questioned passengers and strictly warned transporters and staff to follow the officially fixed fares set by the AJK Transport Authority and district administration. The team also reminded transport owners of potential punitive action, including fines and legal measures, against any violations.
The magisterial team later conducted further inspections through highway blockades, directly questioning passengers about fare charges and reviewing staff behavior, including conductors and drivers, to ensure adherence to service standards and courteous treatment.
Speaking on the occasion, Assistant Commissioner Mian Hussam Sajid urged the public to report any overcharging or misconduct immediately to district authorities for swift action. “Passengers should promptly inform the concerned officers about any fare violations for quick relief,” Tehsildar Imran Yousuf added.
Officials emphasized that these surprise checks aim to protect commuters from unfair practices, ensure transparency, and guarantee a smooth, fair, and safe journey for residents traveling to celebrate Eid with their families.
