MIRPUR (AJK): February 7: Demanding immediate due empowerment of the elected local bodies institutions in Azad Jammu Kashmir, in line with legal and constitutional norms and rules a mammoth Municipal convention of the civic bodies members from Mirpur division of Azad Jammu Kashmir hosted here Thursday demanded of AJK government to immediately approval of the proposed Act to the Local Government through consensus of the elected civic bodies members in the State.
Our Special Jammu Kashmir state Correspondent Altaf Hamid Rao reports from Mirpur that Mirpur District Council Chairman Raja Naveed Akhter and the City Mayor Ch. Usman Ali Khalid hosted the day long Convention attended by hundreds of the councillors of all cadre local govt institutions from entire Azad Jammu Kashmir.
Deputy Mayor of Mirpur AJK Ramzan Chughtai unveiled the objectives of holding of the Councillors Convention, first of the largest gathering of the councillors from entire AJK since the emergence of the local bodies elections through elections over an year ago.
“The budget of the Local Government Department should be distributed equally on a quarterly basis by PC-1 non-PC-1 local representatives, 50% according to the population, 50% equally. The rights of the people under the civic bodies rule of business shall have to be accredited to by the AJK government”. These views were expressed by the speakers while addressing the Convention.

Speakers declared that they will leave no stone unturned to remove every undue hurdle in the way of grassroots level empowerment of the civic institutions.
Speakers pointed out that it was decided jointly by the representatives and the committee established by the government of Azad Jamnu Kashmir that the AJK cabinet committee’s draft should be presented in the AJK Legislative Assembly for approved.
Speakers underlined that the civic bodies members registered protest within the prevelant law. “Thousands of the civic bodies members across AJK will not hesitate to make any sacrifice to secure the mandate of the people and their due rights theough the forum of the elcted local government bodies”, speakers reiterated.
They expressed gratitude to the members of the Azad Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly for their consent for the Draft Act 2025 required to be approved by the State Legislature to pave the way for empowerment of the local bodies institutions in the state without further delay, they emphasized.
