MIRPUR (AJK), March 10: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Food Authority imposed fines totaling Rs. 178,000 on milk shops, samosa-pakora stalls, bakeries and general stores during a day-long crackdown against substandard and unhygienic food in Mirpur.
The operation followed instructions from the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government and the Director General of the Food Authority to ensure the supply of safe, quality food and protect public health. Authorities said the drive aims to discourage food adulteration and maintain consumer trust in local outlets.
A mobile inspection squad conducted checks in the suburban Bin Khurman area of Mirpur city. Shops were assessed for compliance with food safety regulations and hygiene standards.
The drive was led by Deputy Director Food Qazi Ijaz Ahmed with Food Controller Adnan Naqvi, Food Technologist Shoaib Khurshid and Assistant Food Safety Officer Asif Riaz.
Several outlets were found violating rules, supplying poor-quality milk and failing to maintain proper sanitation. Cooking oil used in preparing Iftar items was examined by a mobile food testing lab.
Fines were imposed under Sections 22, 29 and 33 of the Food Act to discourage unsafe food and protect public health. The Food Authority reaffirmed its commitment to regular inspections and warned that strict action would continue against violators to ensure hygienic and safe food for consumers.
