Doha, 17 October 2025 – A new musical drama titled “Poelang Kampoeng” (Homecoming) graced the stage in Qatar, delivering an emotional story about the journey of Indonesian diaspora returning home and being reintroduced to the rich and diverse culture of their homeland. The performance invites the audience into a deep reflection on the meaning of Indonesia, family, and sacrifice.
This musical drama was presented for the first time by Indonesia in Qatar and attended by around 1,000 people, citizens and residences of Qatar. The successful production of this musical drama was made possible through the collaboration between the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Doha, the Government of Qatar, the Hamilton International School Doha, and with the full support of seven Indonesian Art and Cultural Group, as well as the Indonesian community in Qatar.
Among the audience were foreign ambassadors, Qatari government officials, journalists, influencers, art enthusiasts, international guests, and members of the Indonesian community in Qatar. Several ambassadors and members of the foreign diplomatic corps attending the performance came from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Austria, Nepal, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Mozambique, Sweden, and Türkiye.
“This musical drama is part of the series of commemoration of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day in 2025,” said Ridwan Hassan, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Qatar. He further added that the performance serves as a reminder to all Indonesians and expatriates in Qatar that every child born and raised in this country carries two sides of heart and mind—one belonging to their family’s homeland and the other to Qatar, where they were born. The story conveys an important message to both Indonesians and other expatriate communities: to continue nurturing love for their homeland while upholding care and affection for the country where they currently reside.
The production process and the entire cast of Poelang Kampoeng were organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Qatar together with members of the Indonesian community represented by Bahana Indonesia Gemilang (BIG) Choir, Gempita Seni Dukhan, Indonesia Ladies Angklung, Puspa Qinarya, Rumah Seni Alkhor, Sanggar Bhineka Wakra, and Sanggar Seni Messaied.
The music in this drama beautifully combines traditional Indonesian instruments such as angklung with modern arrangements accompanying traditional dances from various regions of Indonesia—creating a warm and moving atmosphere throughout the performance.
