In a bold move to streamline the US federal workforce, employees received an email on Saturday demanding they list their accomplishments from the past week or face resignation. This directive followed a post by billionaire Elon Musk on X, where he warned that failure to respond would be considered a resignation.
Musk, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), is driving efforts to reduce government spending through aggressive layoffs and budget cuts. The email, confirmed as authentic by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), instructed employees to submit five bullet points summarizing their achievements by midnight Monday, copying their managers. Though the message didn’t explicitly mention the consequences of non-compliance, Musk’s post made the ultimatum clear.
The American Federation of Government Employees criticized the message as “cruel and disrespectful,” vowing to challenge any unlawful dismissals. Meanwhile, newly appointed FBI Director Kash Patel advised his staff to pause responses until proper procedures were clarified.
President Trump, speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), defended the initiative as part of a broader strategy to create a smaller, more efficient federal workforce. He praised Musk’s efforts and urged even more aggressive cuts to eliminate what he described as “incompetent and corrupt bureaucrats.”
Thousands of government employees from agencies such as the IRS, Pentagon, and FAA have already been dismissed in recent weeks. Musk’s approach mirrors his handling of staff reductions at X (formerly Twitter), where employees faced similar ultimatums.
Trump has consistently supported Musk’s actions, stating on Truth Social that Musk is doing a “great job” reducing the federal workforce and encouraging him to push even harder.
