Myanmar’s Union Parliament is set to elect the country’s president on April 3, following the completion of the nomination process, state media reported on Thursday.
Three vice presidents—Min Aung Hlaing, Nan Ni Ni Aye, and U Nyo Saw—have qualified as presidential candidates after passing the required scrutiny.
Earlier this week, elected representatives of the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) and Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) selected Min Aung Hlaing and Nan Ni Ni Aye as vice presidents. U Nyo Saw was nominated separately by military-appointed lawmakers from both chambers.
Under Myanmar’s constitutional process, the president is chosen by an electoral college comprising all members of the Union Parliament. The college votes to select one of the three vice presidents as head of state.
The upcoming vote marks a key step in the country’s political process, as authorities move forward with the formal selection of national leadership.
