JERUSALEM, Aug. 31 – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that Israel had targeted Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas’ military wing, in an airstrike on Gaza City, while also vowing to assassinate all senior leaders of Yemen’s Houthi movement.
According to a Palestinian source cited by Al Arabiya, Obeida was killed on Saturday when Israeli warplanes struck an apartment in Gaza City. The source said members of his family and Hamas’ al-Qassam Brigades confirmed his death after identifying the body. All those inside the apartment were reported dead.
Netanyahu told his weekly cabinet meeting that the attack was carried out jointly by the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet security agency. “We still do not know the final result,” he said. “I hope he is no longer among us, but it is telling that no one from Hamas is addressing the matter.”
In the same session, Netanyahu vowed to pursue the Houthi leadership. The Israeli military had struck a gathering of senior Houthi officials in Sanaa on Thursday. The Houthis confirmed that Ahmed al-Rahawi, prime minister of the Houthi-backed government, was killed, along with several ministers. Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV later announced that deputy prime minister Mohammed Miftah had been appointed caretaker leader.
