Several polling locations across New Jersey were temporarily closed early Tuesday after authorities received threats targeting sites in Bergen, Essex, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Passaic counties, Attorney General Matthew Platkin confirmed.
“Law enforcement officers have responded at each affected polling place, and they have worked swiftly to secure these locations and ensure the safety of every voter,” Platkin said. While some polling sites have since reopened, voters at other locations were directed to alternate polling places.
Platkin praised law enforcement and election workers for their rapid response and confirmed that state authorities are coordinating with federal and local partners. He assured voters that they could cast their ballots safely and warned that the state “will not tolerate any attempts to interfere with our elections.”
The threats drew concern from political leaders beyond New Jersey. Zohran Mamdani, the leading mayoral candidate in neighboring New York City, described the threats as “incredibly concerning” and indicative of broader attempts to intimidate voters. He linked such incidents to ongoing claims of voter fraud used to suppress citizen participation.
Authorities continue to investigate the source of the threats while emphasizing that election safety remains a top priority. Law enforcement officials reaffirmed that all necessary measures are being taken to protect polling sites and maintain voter confidence across the state.
