Palestinian-Americans have expressed deep anger and frustration over US President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to “take over” Gaza, a territory many still consider home. Trump’s remarks, made during a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggested the US would take control of Gaza and turn it into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” while relocating Palestinians elsewhere.
Iman Kishawi, a Palestinian-American from Gaza now living in Los Angeles, expressed her outrage, questioning: “Who are you to own the land?” Her sentiments were echoed by others who criticized Trump’s disregard for Palestinian dignity and rights. Laila El-Haddad, an author and activist, called the idea “appalling,” while Tariq Luthun from Michigan described it as another example of US imperialist policy.
Trump’s proposal marks a stark departure from long-standing US policy on the region and has met with backlash from Palestinian communities. Many see it as further dehumanizing Palestinians and dismissing their right to return to their homeland. Kishawi, who had recently hoped for a return to Gaza after the ceasefire, now feels that hope has been dashed. “The minute you see hope coming, it’s gone,” she said.
As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues, these remarks have only deepened the wounds for Palestinian-Americans, with many questioning the future of their community’s connection to Gaza and their homeland.
