PROVIDENCE, R.I., Dec. 14 – A person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting at Brown University that left two dead and nine injured, officials confirmed.
The individual was apprehended early Sunday at a hotel in Coventry, approximately 28 miles south of Providence. Law enforcement sources reported the person was in possession of two firearms at the time of detention. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the shelter-in-place order had been lifted and no additional suspects were being sought.
The suspect, who is not a student at Brown University, was located thanks to a tip from the public, authorities said. Federal officials confirmed the individual is currently considered a person of interest.
The shooting occurred on Saturday in the university’s Barus & Holley building, where engineering and physics classes are held, during a final exam review session. University President Christina H. Paxson expressed sorrow, stating, “Our hearts go out to them. No parent or family member should ever have to endure a day like this.”
Eight of the nine injured victims remained hospitalized Sunday morning, with seven in stable condition and one in critical but stable condition. Providence Police said that while the shelter-in-place order for the College Hill campus has ended, parts of the area remain an active crime scene.
Federal authorities, including the FBI, assisted in the investigation and shared video footage of the person of interest prior to the arrest. Officials continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any information that may aid the ongoing investigation.
