Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Tehran on Wednesday to attend the funeral of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash on May 19. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed his participation in the funeral, which will also see leaders from various countries, particularly Muslim-majority nations.
President Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, East Azerbaijan Province Governor Malek Rahmati, Raisi’s bodyguard team head Mehdi Mousavi, and the Iranian Supreme Leader’s representative in the province, Mohammad Ali Al-e-Hashem, perished in the crash in northern Azerbaijan.
The Pakistani government expressed deep condolences to Iran over the tragic loss. “We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of President Raisi and extend our deepest condolences to the people and government of Iran,” read a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
PM Shehbaz announced that Pakistan will observe a day of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast, to honor Raisi and his companions. He recalled hosting Raisi and Amirabdollahian in Pakistan less than a month ago, remembering them as “good friends of Pakistan.”
Shehbaz Sharif also visited the Iranian embassy to express his condolences. “Our sympathies and prayers are with the family members of the martyrs and the people of Iran,” he said.
