VATICAN — Pope Leo XIV called for global unity and renewed efforts toward lasting peace as he began his official visit to Türkiye on Thursday. Speaking to journalists aboard his ITA Airways flight, the Vatican leader emphasized that his trip carries deep significance not only for Christians but for people of all faiths around the world.
More than 70 journalists, including representatives from Anadolu, accompanied the pontiff on his journey. Pope Leo XIV expressed his pleasure in undertaking the visit, noting that he had long looked forward to the opportunity to highlight the universal responsibility to maintain peace.
The pope will also travel to Lebanon as part of the regional tour, where he intends to strengthen messages of coexistence and mutual understanding. He stressed that despite differences in religion, culture, or belief, humanity remains fundamentally connected, and all people share a common duty to promote peaceful coexistence.
Pope Leo XIV said he hopes his visit will inspire renewed cooperation among nations and communities seeking reconciliation and stability. He reaffirmed that true peace requires unity, empathy, and collective commitment, urging people everywhere to contribute to building a more harmonious world.
