KYIV – A wave of record-breaking Russian drone and missile attacks struck Kyiv overnight, killing one person and injuring at least 26, amid growing frustration over stalled ceasefire efforts.
Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 550 drones and 11 missiles its largest drone assault since the start of the war. Seventy-two drones penetrated Ukrainian air defences, triggering eight hours of continuous air raid sirens in the capital.
Fires raged across the city as schools, buildings, cars, and rail infrastructure were damaged. Rescuers recovered a body from the rubble in Svyatoshynsky district. Poland confirmed damage to its consulate in Kyiv.
The bombardment followed a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Afterward, Trump expressed disappointment, saying Putin showed “no interest” in ending the war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes as “cynical” and “deliberate,” emphasizing that the attack came directly after the call with Trump. He urged the US and allies to step up sanctions and weapon supplies.
Russia’s defence ministry claimed the “massive strike” was retaliation for “terrorist acts” by Kyiv. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone reportedly killed a woman in Russia’s Rostov region.
The Kremlin reiterated it would pursue its objectives militarily if diplomatic means fail. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said the conflict would continue as long as Russia’s goals are unmet.
Trump criticized the Biden administration for “emptying out” U.S. weapon stocks and said he would ensure enough reserves before aiding Ukraine. Zelensky hopes to speak with Trump about reversing the latest suspension of critical U.S. arms shipments.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and Germany have called for flexibility in supporting Ukraine’s defence needs, with Berlin in talks to acquire Patriot systems from the U.S. for Ukraine.
