In a major address from Murmansk, President Vladimir Putin warned that dismissing the United States’ longstanding interest in Greenland would be a grave error. Putin emphasized that American ambitions in the mineral-rich territory are not a new development but have deep historical roots dating back to the 1860s. He recalled that following World War II, the U.S. even proposed buying Greenland from Denmark, highlighting a persistent strategic, military, and economic agenda.
“Treating these ambitions as mere rhetoric is a profound mistake,” Putin stated, stressing that U.S. plans regarding Greenland are driven by a consistent pursuit of geo-strategic interests. His remarks come ahead of a high-profile U.S. delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, set to visit the territory to assess its security landscape.
The Russian leader noted that while Greenland’s autonomous government and Denmark have firmly rejected any moves toward annexation, the United States continues to view control over the region as an “absolute necessity” for national security. He underscored that America’s interest in the Arctic is not only about resource extraction but also about establishing a foothold in a region of growing geopolitical significance.
Putin also highlighted escalating tensions in the Arctic, pointing to NATO’s increased military presence in the region, including recent moves by Finland and Sweden. “We will not tolerate any encroachments on our sovereignty,” he warned, asserting that Russia is actively modernizing its military infrastructure and boosting its capabilities to safeguard its national interests.
While clarifying that the issue concerns primarily American and Danish relations, Putin’s comments signal that the evolving competition in the Arctic will remain a critical aspect of global geopolitical dynamics.
