MOSCOW, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday condemned recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, calling them “unprovoked aggression” that is pushing the world toward a dangerous tipping point.
In a Kremlin meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, Putin said the attacks lacked justification and warned that escalating tensions in the Middle East especially threats targeting Iranian leadership could lead to broader conflict. “Extra-regional powers are being drawn into this crisis. This brings the world to a very dangerous line,” he stated, without naming the U.S. directly.
Putin pledged support to the Iranian people but offered no specific measures. Araqchi, who reportedly carried a message from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, conveyed Tehran’s concerns and best wishes from Iran’s leadership.
Putin’s comments come amid speculation by U.S. and Israeli officials over potential regime change or targeting Iran’s supreme leader moves Russia believes could trigger full-scale regional war.
While Russia and Iran signed a 20-year strategic partnership earlier this year, the pact includes no mutual defense clause. Moscow has expressed opposition to a nuclear-armed Iran but has not committed to direct intervention, despite Tehran’s growing frustration over what it sees as limited Russian backing.
At the UN Security Council on Sunday, Russia, China, and Pakistan called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East. Russia’s UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia criticized Washington’s justification for the strikes, drawing parallels with the 2003 Iraq invasion. “Once again, millions in the Middle East are paying the price for U.S. ‘fairytales’,” he said.
With Moscow entrenched in its war in Ukraine, Putin appears cautious about deepening confrontation with the U.S. over Iran, even as Tehran seeks more concrete support.
