Qatar and Turkiye: Historical relations, growing strategic partnership

Doha, November 13 (QNA) – HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani has commenced an official visit to the Republic of Turkiye to strengthen Qatar-Turkiye strategic relations. HH the Amir will meet with HE President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss expanding cooperation across various sectors and exchanging views on key regional and global developments.

A key event in the visit is the 10th Qatari-Turkish Supreme Strategic Committee meeting, co-chaired by HH the Amir and HE President Erdogan. Since 2014, this committee has been central to advancing high-level cooperation, resulting in over 110 agreements across fields such as economy, defense, culture, and education, reflecting a robust partnership that benefits both nations.

In July 2023, Qatar and Turkiye marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, which have transformed into a strategic partnership covering crucial sectors like trade, security, and investment. Qatar is one of Turkiye’s largest foreign investors, with major stakes in companies like Turkish auto-manufacturer BMC and planned projects, including the Istanbul Canal. Bilateral trade has flourished, reaching QR4.75 billion in 2023, with both countries aiming to raise this to $5 billion.

Military collaboration also underpins the relationship, anchored by a defense cooperation agreement allowing joint military use of ports and facilities. Qatar’s support for Turkiye during the February 2023 earthquake underscored this close partnership, with over 1,000 tons of aid sent and a dedicated container city set up in Hatay.

Cultural and educational ties continue to grow through initiatives like the Turkish Cultural Center in Doha and agreements between national libraries. The strong ties are reflected in frequent high-level exchanges, a testament to the shared commitment to fostering peace, stability, and economic prosperity for both nations.
