New York, July 23 (QNA) – The State of Qatar has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes, particularly through mediation, during a high-level UN Security Council debate on promoting international peace and security through multilateralism.
HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, highlighted Qatar’s longstanding dedication to diplomacy and conflict resolution. She underscored the tripartite summit held in March in Doha, where HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani hosted the Presidents of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The summit led to a breakthrough: the signing of the Declaration of Principles in Doha between the DRC government and the Congo River Alliance/March 23 Movement. This complemented the peace agreement signed earlier in Washington, D.C., under the auspices of US President Donald Trump.
Addressing Afghanistan, Sheikha Alya reaffirmed Qatar’s ongoing mediation role, including its hosting of the UN-led Doha Process aimed at reintegrating Afghanistan into the international community.
On Gaza, Sheikha Alya described the war’s outbreak in 2023 as a major international challenge. She noted Qatar’s intensive mediation efforts, in collaboration with Egypt and the United States, which yielded concrete results such as a ceasefire, improved humanitarian access, and prisoner exchanges. She affirmed that Qatar continues to work toward a final ceasefire to end the humanitarian crisis.
She also condemned the broader regional escalation caused by Israeli military actions, which extended beyond Gaza to Lebanon, Syria, and other areas. She revealed that a missile attack targeting Qatar on June 23 was successfully intercepted by Qatari air defenses.
Welcoming the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, Sheikha Alya expressed hope for sustained dialogue and long-term peace. In conclusion, she urged the Security Council to uphold its responsibilities, enforce its resolutions, and tripartite peaceful solutions to prevent further conflict and suffering.
