Beirut, August 5, 2025 – Chairperson of Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), H.E. Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah, held a series of high-level meetings in Beirut to enhance cooperation between Qatar and Lebanon in the field of human rights.
In meetings with Dr. Michel Moussa, Head of the Lebanese Parliamentary Human Rights Committee, and Dr. Fadi Gerges, President of the Lebanese National Human Rights Commission, Al-Attiyah discussed strengthening ties through joint workshops, training programs, and advocacy campaigns. These efforts are part of NHRC’s broader strategy in partnership with the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, headquartered in Doha.
A central theme was the urgent need to end double standards in international institutions and ensure accountability for violations—particularly regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza. Al-Attiyah reiterated Qatar’s firm support for the Palestinian cause, highlighting its humanitarian aid and mediation efforts, and condemned Israeli policies that deliberately obstruct aid, leading to famine and high civilian casualties, especially among children.
Al-Attiyah also emphasized expanding collaboration with Lebanese civil society organizations working on the rights of women, children, and people with disabilities. Discussions included enhancing legal protections, encouraging public engagement, and clarifying available complaint mechanisms. She praised Lebanese civil society’s commitment and stressed the need for strong national alliances to defend human rights collectively.
In her meeting with Dr. Fadi Gerges, Al-Attiyah applauded the Lebanese Commission’s dedication to prison monitoring, complaint handling, and international advocacy. She reaffirmed Qatar’s support in helping Lebanon’s Commission achieve “A” status accreditation from the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions—a distinction Qatar’s NHRC has held three times.
She also encouraged the use of international human rights mechanisms to expand civic space and reviewed NHRC’s national awareness initiatives in Qatar targeting vulnerable groups.
Al-Attiyah praised the enduring partnership between Qatar and Lebanon in the human rights domain, affirming that shared efforts can build stronger, fairer, and more inclusive societies across the region.
