New York, February 20 (QNA) – The State of Qatar has reaffirmed that regional and global stability cannot be achieved without a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue, in accordance with international legitimacy. It emphasized that Palestine is not just a political issue confined to a specific geography but a central concern affecting peace and stability in the Middle East and the world.
This statement was delivered by HE Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Seif Al-Thani during the UN Security Council’s open debate on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance” at the UN headquarters in New York.
Her Excellency highlighted Qatar’s mediation efforts, which, in partnership with Egypt and the United States, facilitated the ceasefire agreement and prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas on Jan. 15, 2025. She expressed hope that implementing this agreement would pave the way for a credible political process leading to lasting peace, ensuring Palestinian self-determination and the establishment of an independent state based on the 1967 borders.
HE Sheikha Alia underscored the significance of the debate on multilateralism, governance reform, and respect for international law. She noted that 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, an opportunity to reaffirm the global commitment to its founding mission—preventing war and building a just international system through multilateral cooperation. She stressed that a comprehensive approach is needed to prevent conflicts and achieve sustainable peace, with Qatar remaining committed to de-escalation efforts and conflict resolution through diplomatic mediation.
Furthermore, Her Excellency warned that double standards in international relations undermine the authority of international law. Ensuring its equal and uniform application across all countries and institutions must be a priority. She reiterated Qatar’s pride in its mediation efforts, which have played a key role in regional and global peace initiatives.
Qatar also urged an expedited reform of the UN Security Council to enhance its effectiveness in fulfilling its primary responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security. Reaffirming Qatar’s strong commitment to multilateralism, HE Sheikha Alia called for strengthening global governance to better address pressing global challenges and ensure a more just and effective international order.
