HE Director-General of Qatar News Agency (QNA), Ahmed bin Saeed Al Rumaihi, emphasized the significance of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani’s recent call for a public referendum on constitutional amendments, marking a landmark moment in Qatar’s modern history. Scheduled for Tuesday, the referendum underscores the Qatari leadership’s vision to secure the nation’s highest interests and promote citizens’ active role in governance.
Al Rumaihi noted that this referendum demonstrates Qatar’s commitment to enhancing popular participation by empowering citizens to express their views on laws affecting their lives. He stressed that such a move strengthens transparency, accountability, and mutual trust between the government and the community, offering a “golden opportunity” to advance the country’s political development and address the aspirations of the Qatari people for a better future.
Highlighting that voting is both a right and a duty for all eligible citizens, Al Rumaihi described the referendum as a key mechanism to consolidate popular participation, enabling citizens to influence decisions that directly impact their lives. He added that this process contributes to building a strong national identity, essential to Qatar’s comprehensive progress.
The General Referendum Committee has facilitated broad participation through options for paper, electronic, and Metrash2 voting, allowing a wide spectrum of citizens to cast their votes. Al Rumaihi encouraged all eligible citizens to participate actively, noting that widespread participation reinforces the legitimacy of the amendments and reflects national consensus on essential reforms.
The referendum, he said, fosters a culture of decision-making on critical national issues, elevating political awareness and patriotism. The amendments derive their legitimacy from public satisfaction, marking a vital step in Qatar’s journey toward a more participatory and informed society, with citizens’ voices central to shaping the nation’s future.
