Displaced civilians in Gaza face worsening conditions as heavy rainstorms compound their suffering during Israel’s ongoing military offensive, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) reported on Tuesday.
The rains have flooded over 100 tents in Khan Younis, where displaced families seek refuge, causing extensive damage. “Around 500 families still live along Gaza’s shoreline, enduring unimaginable hardships,” UNRWA said, urging for increased humanitarian aid to help residents endure the harsh winter.
Israel’s military campaign, ongoing since October 7, 2023, has claimed over 45,500 lives, predominantly women and children, despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel is also facing genocide charges at the International Court of Justice.
UNRWA reiterated the urgent need for regular humanitarian assistance to provide warmth and shelter, as the enclave’s crisis escalates under devastating conditions.
