Rapid ongoing climate change to lead excessive monsoon rains in region: ADC ( G) Omer Tariq Raja

MIRPUR ( AJK): June 24; “Because of rrecent climate change, a considerable increase is very much expected in the forthcoming monsoon rains in this region”, experts predicted.

“In this regard, all district functioneries including all emergency services institutions, will remain on high alert in this densely populated district of Mirpur AJK”, disclosed Additional Deputy Commissioner General Raja Umar Tariq Khan said.

Our Special Jammu Kashmir state Correspondent Altaf Hamid Rao reports that while chairing an extra ordinary meeting of various related nation building institutions here on Tuesday, the ADC (G) directed that precautionary measures should be taken to provide emergency services, meet health and nutritional needs to deal with any emergency situation. A central control room will be established in the Deputy Commissioner’s office to monitor the situation across the district due to monsoon rains. All rivers, streams, etc. in the district, including Dhan Gali, Palak, Pir Gali, Mangla, Lahri, Chichiyan, Afzalpur, Jatlan, Upper Jhelum Canal, Jhelum River and especially those living in Mangla Jatlan Bela will have to shift to safer places in advance, Raja Tariq said.

The Additional DC (General) continued that rescue 1122, civil defense volunteers, NGOs will be involved in relief and rescue operations in emergency situations. The Highways Department will remain on high alert with its missionaries and manpower to keep the roads running. The Health and Sanitation Department of the Municipality will clean and disinfect all drains in Mirpur city so that water does not enter houses due to blockage of drains, he underlined.

He further said that committees with public representatives should be formed at the village and village level so that people can get information about rain and floods and also inform people about the damages and concerns of rains. Schools, colleges and other government buildings across the district will be used for emergency situations. Vehicles of all government and semi-government institutions of the district will remain present in their respective offices and can be used for relief operations in any emergency. The essential departments, including the Public Health Department, Electricity, Water Rescue, Public Health Engineering and other public service providers, will also be on alert.

The ADC (General) further advised audiance nation building institutions’ districf heads to prepare a contingency strategy to deal with floods and emergencies due to monsoon rains. Addressing the meeting, Additional Deputy Commissioner General Raja Umar Tariq said that all the institutions, including missionaries, manpower and resources, will remain on high alert to deal with floods or any kind of emergency due to monsoon rains and they will fulfill their responsibilities in this regard. He said that due to the upcoming monsoon rains and major flood relays in the rivers, all possible steps will be taken to keep the people living around Mangla Dam, especially in Mangla and Khari along the Jhelum River, safe. There should be no negligence on the part of any department or institution in this regard, nor should any excuse be made.

He said that the way the District Disaster Management Authority and all the institutions have done excellent work during the rains, floods and earthquakes in the past, this tradition should be maintained. Mirpur Municipality will take all possible steps regarding health and sanitation, while the Public Health Department will take necessary steps regarding treatment in hospitals and health centers across the district.

SP Raja Amir Shahzad Nawabi, while addressing the meeting, said that police stations will also be kept on high alert for immediate notification of danger due to the incoming rains and monsoon. In this regard, the police department will fulfill its responsibilities in collaboration with other institutions to establish law and order and keep traffic flowing throughout the district. With the mutual cooperation of the administration, police, government and semi-government institutions, NGOs and the public, any kind of emergency situation can be controlled. In this regard, all institutions should make advance preparations for relief work.
