Pakistan’s cricket captain, Mohammad Rizwan, stressed the need for greater awareness and professionalism from the national team to overcome the challenges they have faced in international tournaments. Speaking ahead of the Champions Trophy, which begins tomorrow in Karachi, Rizwan emphasized that the Green Shirts must enhance their performance to secure ICC titles.
Pakistan is hosting its first ICC event since co-hosting the 1996 ODI World Cup. Their most recent victory came in the 2017 Champions Trophy, where they defeated India. Since then, Pakistan has experienced mixed results, including semi-final appearances at the T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2022, but early exits in most other events.
“This is a historic moment for Pakistan with a global tournament returning after 29 years. The whole nation should cherish this,” Rizwan told the press. Reflecting on the team’s inconsistent performances, he added, “We need to improve our awareness and professionalism,” acknowledging the team’s immense talent despite fluctuating results.
Rizwan, commenting on the challenges faced in previous ICC events, revealed that the team’s approach is to focus on improving the small 1% that has led to losses in crucial moments. The skipper also discussed team selections, including Babar Azam’s role as an opener, based on the home conditions and the tactical need to counter spinners effectively.
Looking ahead, Rizwan expressed confidence in the team’s resilience, saying, “We are a hardworking, courageous, and smart team, and God will help us get the desired result.”
