Washington, Aug. 17 – The United States will continue efforts to help end Russia’s war in Ukraine, though success may not be possible, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday in an interview with CBS’s Face the Nation.
“If peace is not going to be possible here and this is just going to continue on as a war, people will continue to die by the thousands … we may unfortunately wind up there, but we don’t want to wind up there,” Rubio stated.
His remarks came ahead of a high-profile meeting in Washington on Monday, where European leaders will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting follows Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday. Trump has been pressing Ukraine to consider a quick peace deal, a proposal that has stirred both anticipation and concern among allies.
Rubio noted that while some elements discussed at the Alaska summit offered “potential for breakthroughs,” much remains unresolved. Key agenda items in Washington will include security guarantees for Ukraine and possible frameworks for peace negotiations.
According to diplomatic sources, Trump and Putin’s discussions included proposals involving territorial compromises: Russia relinquishing small areas of occupied territory, while Ukraine would cede fortified eastern zones and freeze the conflict along existing front lines.
Rubio emphasized that while the U.S. remains committed to pursuing peace, the complexity of the conflict may limit Washington’s ability to deliver a definitive resolution.
