British comedian Russell Brand has been formally charged with multiple sexual offenses, including rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault, involving four women between 1999 and 2005. The charges, announced by the Metropolitan Police, follow a 13-month investigation prompted by allegations made in 2023. Brand, 50, is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2, 2025. He has denied the allegations, maintaining that his relationships were consensual.
The investigation was sparked by a joint report from The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches, which detailed accusations from four women about incidents occurring between 2006 and 2013 during Brand’s time with the BBC and Channel 4. One accuser claims she was 16 years old when she met Brand, resulting in an emotionally abusive relationship. Another woman alleges Brand raped her at his Los Angeles home, supported by medical evidence. A third accuser claims sexual assault at Brand’s West Hollywood residence, while the fourth describes both physical and emotional abuse.
In response, Brand released a video strongly denying the charges, stating, “I absolutely refute… these very, very serious criminal allegations.” He admitted to a promiscuous past but insisted all his relationships were consensual. Brand also speculated that the accusations could be part of a coordinated effort against him.
The Crown Prosecution Service has stressed the importance of a fair trial and cautioned against public commentary that could prejudice the case. The investigation has also brought attention to Brand’s career in mainstream media and his later transition to online platforms where he discusses politics and free speech. Authorities have urged any additional victims to come forward as the investigation continues.
