MOSCOW, Dec. 2 – Russian President Vladimir Putin has been briefed on Russian forces’ reported capture of Krasnoarmeysk in Donetsk and Volchansk in Kharkov, the Kremlin said Monday.
Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, confirmed the captures and provided updates on operations in other areas, noting that the success in Krasnoarmeysk is expected to support objectives set at the start of Russia’s special military operation. Putin, cited by RIA Novosti, called the progress “an important direction” that will ensure the continued implementation of key operational goals.
On Monday night, the Russian Defense Ministry released video footage from Krasnoarmeysk showing servicemen raising the Russian flag in the city’s main square. However, there has been no independent verification that either city has fully fallen under Russian control.
The announcement comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks in Paris with European leaders, emphasizing the need for a “dignified” end to the conflict and calling for solid security guarantees, while noting that territorial issues will be the most challenging.
Ahead of his visit to Moscow, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to meet President Putin to discuss a U.S.-backed plan for resolving the Ukraine crisis. Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said progress was made on a revised 28-point peace plan, but further negotiations are needed.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the planned meeting with Witkoff, aimed at advancing discussions toward ending the conflict in Ukraine.
