Moscow, January 5 — Russian forces have taken control of the Grabovskoye settlement in Ukraine’s Sumy region, according to a statement issued Monday by the Russian Defense Ministry.
The ministry said units from the “North” group of forces are continuing their advance with the aim of establishing a security buffer along border areas of Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkiv regions. The operation, it added, forms part of broader efforts to secure Russia’s frontier and limit potential threats from across the border.
According to the statement, Russian forces carried out strikes on a range of Ukrainian military-related targets, including military-industrial facilities, military airfield infrastructure, drone production and assembly workshops, a drone operator training center, and temporary deployment sites used by Ukrainian forces and foreign fighters. The strikes were reported across 148 locations.
The ministry further said Russian air defense systems were active over the past 24 hours, intercepting three guided aerial bombs, three U.S.-supplied HIMARS rockets, and 356 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles.
No independent confirmation of the claims was immediately available.
