On Saturday, cricket’s most celebrated icon, Sachin Tendulkar, bid farewell to the sport after a legendary 24-year career. The “Little Master,” aged 40, made his final appearance in a record 200th Test match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where a stand is named in his honor.
Regarded as the highest run-scorer in cricket history, Tendulkar’s remarkable journey from a 16-year-old prodigy in 1989 to the world’s leading Test and ODI scorer is unmatched. He remains the only player to score 100 international centuries and holds nearly every batting record. Though he never achieved Don Bradman’s career average or Brian Lara’s monumental individual scores, Tendulkar’s team-first mentality was always evident, with the 2011 World Cup win standing as his career highlight.
Revered for his humility and sportsmanship, Tendulkar’s career transcended cricket. From his early days, mentored by his brother Ajit and coached by Ramakant Achrekar, to his iconic partnership with Vinod Kambli, his journey was shaped by dedication and sacrifice. Beyond the field, Tendulkar’s influence extended to philanthropic efforts and he remains a symbol of integrity in the world of sport.
As Tendulkar retires, India and the world celebrate a career that will never be replicated. A true “one in a billion” athlete, his legacy will live on forever.
