Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy received the prestigious Cinema for Peace Dove Award for Women’s Empowerment at the Cinema for Peace Gala 2025. She was recognized for her documentary Diane Von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge, which highlights the resilience, entrepreneurship, and empowerment of legendary designer Diane von Furstenberg.
The award, initiated by actor and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman in 2013, honors films that significantly contribute to showcasing women’s strength and perseverance. This year’s accolade coincided with the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.
Chinoy’s documentary premiered at the Tribeca Festival and gained critical acclaim following its release on Hulu in June 2024. The film explores von Furstenberg’s journey, from creating the iconic wrap dress to her lasting influence as a cultural figure.
Speaking about the recognition, Chinoy stated, “Diane’s story is a testament to courage, determination, and the ongoing fight for women’s rights. Her legacy reminds us that change is always possible, and this film celebrates that universal truth.”
The 2025 Cinema for Peace Gala also honored Sir Bob Geldof for his humanitarian contributions, marking 40 years since Live Aid and We Are the World. Previous honorees include Pope Francis, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and Dame Helen Mirren.
