Sheikh Hasina takes refuge in India amid Bangladesh turmoil
Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar Updates Parliament on Neighboring Crisis
NEW DELHI – Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken refuge in India following her request for temporary stay approval. Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed in parliament that Hasina arrived in Delhi on Monday evening after India received a flight clearance request from Bangladeshi authorities.
Earlier on Tuesday, Jaishankar led an all-party meeting to discuss the unfolding situation in Bangladesh, emphasizing India’s desire to give the 76-year-old leader time to decide her next steps.
Hasina fled Bangladesh amid violent protests over government job quotas. In a national address, Bangladeshi military chief Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman announced her resignation and the formation of a transitional government.
Jaishankar assured that the Indian government remains in close contact with the Indian community in Bangladesh through diplomatic channels. Approximately 19,000 Indian nationals reside in Bangladesh, including around 9,000 students. He expects the host government to ensure the security of Indian diplomatic missions there.
“Briefed an all-party meeting in Parliament today about the ongoing developments in Bangladesh. Appreciate the unanimous support and understanding that was extended,” Jaishankar shared on X.
Following the dissolution of the Bangladeshi parliament, protest leaders proposed Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus to head an interim government. Sheikh Hasina, who ruled for 15 years, has yet to comment on the recent events.
