Siem Reap, Cambodia, October 16 – The Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI), a Chinese-invested project, celebrated its second anniversary on Thursday with the inauguration of two monumental statues at its departure terminal.
Mao Havannall, minister in charge of Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, congratulated the airport on its achievements, describing SAI as a vital bridge connecting Cambodia to the world. “It has become a strong foundation for supporting tourism and investment, and boosting Cambodia’s economic growth across the country,” he said.
Since its opening, the airport has handled 29,154 flights and welcomed 2.73 million passengers as of September 30, 2025, according to airport operators. The anniversary celebration was attended by SAI officials, the Siem Reap Provincial Administration, airline representatives, and tour operators.
The newly inaugurated statues honor Divakarapandita, an influential scholar and religious figure of the Angkor Dynasty who served five Cambodian kings and initiated the construction of Angkor Wat, and Zhou Daguan, a Chinese diplomat who visited Cambodia in 1296-1297 and documented the Angkor period, contributing significantly to China-Cambodia cultural relations.
Invested by Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co Ltd, the airport serves as a primary gateway to the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park, facilitating tourism and international connectivity in the region.
The airport’s milestone underscores its role in promoting Cambodia’s tourism sector, enhancing regional connectivity, and fostering cultural and economic exchanges between Cambodia and the international community.
