Ghotki, Aug. 31 – Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah visited the Qadirpur Shank Dam on Saturday to review safety measures and ongoing work aimed at protecting the structure from erosion and flood threats.
He was received by Provincial Ministers Sardar Mohammad Bakhsh Khan Mahar and Jam Ikramullah Khan Dharejo, Municipal Committee Chairman Jam Asif Razzaq Khan Dharejo, Sardar Shehryar Khan Shar, PPP District General Secretary Sikandar Ali Lakho, and the Deputy Commissioner. Provincial Ministers Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Makhdoom Mehboob Zaman, and Sharjeel Inam Memon also accompanied him.
During the visit, Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro and Secretary Irrigation Zarif Khero briefed the Chief Minister on the current condition of the dam. Shah stressed that the Qadirpur cone closure remains one of Sindh’s most sensitive flood protection points and requires strict supervision. He recalled that the closure was swept away during the 1973 super flood but was later restored as “Qadirpur cone off,” now serving as a frontline barrier for the Qadirpur loop closure.
The Chief Minister noted that the structure safeguards nearly 5,000 acres of surrounding villages and farmland. However, satellite images from 1986 to 2020 show increasing vulnerability due to changes in the Indus River’s course. Minor discharges have also raised concerns for local communities, he added.
Shah directed the irrigation department to maintain round-the-clock monitoring, strengthen weak points, and ensure immediate preventive measures to protect the dam and nearby settlements from potential flood damage.
