SEOUL, Dec. 3, 2025 — South Korean President Lee Jae Myung confirmed on Wednesday that all communication channels with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) have been completely severed.
Speaking at a press conference with foreign media marking the first anniversary of the botched martial law bid, Lee said relations between the two Koreas have come to a complete standstill. He noted that not only is dialogue halted, but all communication links—including emergency hotlines—have been cut off.
President Lee, who assumed office on June 4 following a snap election, pledged to continue sending conciliatory gestures toward the DPRK. Measures include suspending anti-DPRK propaganda broadcasts in border areas and minimizing military actions that could be misinterpreted.
He emphasized that communications and negotiations between the DPRK and the United States should not be constrained by South Korea’s position. Lee vowed to do his utmost to create conditions for dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington.
The president added that improved DPRK-U.S. relations could help resolve or ease broader Korean Peninsula issues. He also noted that matters such as South Korea-U.S. joint military drills could be discussed if necessary to facilitate dialogue.
Lee’s statements underscore Seoul’s commitment to cautious engagement and support for international efforts aimed at stabilizing the Korean Peninsula, even amid a complete halt in direct communications with Pyongyang.
