New York, April 11 — A Spanish couple, both senior corporate executives, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash over the Hudson River while on a family vacation in New York, officials confirmed Friday.
The victims, whose names have not been publicly released pending family notification, were reportedly traveling aboard a private sightseeing helicopter with their children and a pilot when the aircraft suffered a sudden mechanical failure near Midtown Manhattan. Emergency response teams from NYPD, FDNY, and the U.S. Coast Guard rushed to the scene after eyewitnesses reported the helicopter spiraling into the river.
Authorities said the couple, visiting from Madrid, were high-ranking executives in the finance and tech sectors, respectively. The children and the pilot were rescued with minor injuries and taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Preliminary investigations by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are underway to determine the cause of the crash. Weather conditions were reported to be clear at the time of the incident, and flight permissions were confirmed.
New York Mayor Eric Adams expressed condolences to the victims’ family and the Spanish community, calling the crash “a heartbreaking reminder of the unpredictability of life.”
Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said its consulate in New York is providing support to the surviving family members and is in close coordination with U.S. authorities.
The tragic accident has prompted renewed scrutiny over the safety of commercial sightseeing helicopter tours, which are popular among international tourists in New York City.
