PALM BEACH – House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is set to meet with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on New Year’s Day to discuss strategy ahead of Friday’s pivotal Speaker election.
Speaking to News Radio 710 KEEL in Louisiana, Johnson said the meeting aims to outline plans as he prepares for a closely contested vote. “We’re going to map out some strategy,” he stated.
Trump had initially planned to endorse Johnson on New Year’s Day but moved the announcement earlier at Johnson’s suggestion. The president-elect expressed strong support, posting on Truth Social: “Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hardworking, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN.”
During New Year’s Eve remarks at his Palm Beach resort, Trump reiterated his confidence in Johnson and offered to make calls on his behalf if needed. “We’re going to get a successful vote,” he predicted.
The election poses a challenge for Johnson, who faces opposition from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and uncertainty from key Republicans, including Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas), Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.), Andy Harris (R-Md.), and Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.). With a narrow House majority, Johnson can only afford to lose one GOP vote if all members are present and voting.
As Friday approaches, the meeting underscores Trump’s influence within the GOP and the critical need for unity in securing the Speaker’s position.
