Khartoum:
Sudan’s Ministry of Minerals announced that the country’s gold production for 2025 reached 70 tons, exceeding the annual target by 13 percent, signaling a recovery in the sector following disruptions from ongoing conflict.
The Sudanese Mineral Resources Company, affiliated with the ministry, reported that mining activities contributed approximately 1.087 trillion Sudanese pounds (around 1.8 billion USD) to public revenues this year. Minister of Minerals Nour Al-Daem Taha urged authorities to intensify efforts in 2026 and instructed that new national projects be integrated into the sector’s development strategy.
Gold remains Sudan’s primary source of foreign currency. Production had peaked between 2017 and 2022 but fell sharply to only two tons after five months of war in 2023. It rebounded to 64 tons in 2024, highlighting the sector’s resilience despite the country’s ongoing instability. In 2022, gold accounted for 46.3 percent of Sudan’s non-oil exports, valued at 2.02 billion dollars out of total exports of 4.357 billion dollars, according to Central Bank statistics.
Sudan has been facing deadly conflict since mid-April 2023, following clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and millions displaced. The gold sector’s growth is seen as a vital economic lifeline amid continuing humanitarian and security challenges.
