Russian authorities have detained a 29-year-old Uzbek national accused of assassinating General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s military chemical weapons protection forces. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was arrested near Moscow and allegedly confessed to being recruited by Ukrainian intelligence.
According to officials, the suspect received a homemade explosive device, which he placed on an electric scooter near Kirillov’s apartment building. In exchange, he was reportedly promised $100,000 and relocation to a European country.
Kirillov, a key figure in Russia’s military operations, was targeted shortly after Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) accused him of deploying banned chemical weapons on the battlefield. The SBU has claimed responsibility for the attack, which also killed Kirillov’s aide.
The bombing has escalated tensions between Russia and Ukraine, underscoring the ongoing hostilities between the two nations. Russian authorities continue to investigate the incident.
