Founder Convener Mr. M. I. Farid Reflects on 20 Years of Qatar Talks
Following the grand finale of Qatar Talk 2025, Haroon Qureshi, Editor-in-Chief of Rahbar Kisan International, sat down with Founder Convener Mr. M. I. Farid to reflect on the journey of Qatar Talks, its origins, challenges, evolution, and the milestones marking its 20th edition.
Mr. Farid began by expressing his gratitude to Rahbar Kisan International for its consistent support and partnership over the years. He clarified that Qatar Talks — originally known as IBQ COMMUNICATOR AWARDS — began in 2004, not 2000. In its first year, the event was conducted as a Toastmasters activity. However, Toastmasters International objected to hosting a contest that involved non-Toastmasters, which led the organisers to discontinue its association with Toastmasters. From that point onward, Qatar Talks evolved into an independent, fully non-Toastmasters initiative dedicated to all residents of Qatar.
He explained that the competition initially featured only the Adults’ category. Over time, the Youth /Junior categories were added to accommodate growing interest and to nurture public speaking talent across age groups. Mr. Farid highlighted the remarkable contribution of the event’s multinational Executive Committee, describing them as highly dedicated individuals who take their responsibilities seriously and execute them with precision — a team he considers the backbone of Qatar Talks.
Speaking about early challenges, Mr. Farid noted that the initial objection from Toastmasters International was the most significant hurdle. Once that was resolved, the process became much smoother. Permissions from the Ministry of Culture were obtained, ensuring the event remained compliant and well-structured. He emphasized that continuous improvement has been a guiding principle for the organising team, helping Qatar Talks remain vibrant and relevant for two decades.
Reflecting on the 20th edition, Mr. Farid shared that the milestone year inspired the team to modernise several aspects of the event. Digital registration, a digitized Lucky Draw, and a fully digital Audience Poll were introduced to enhance efficiency and engagement. The Prize Distribution Ceremony also featured pyrotechnics for the first time — a highlight that delighted both the audience and the winners.
He expressed satisfaction that in all the 20 years there has been a different Chief Coordinator giving the opportunity to multinational individuals to learn leadership skills.
Also hundreds of individuals have improved their communication skills.
Mr. Farid concluded by expressing deep appreciation for the unwavering support of well-wishers, sponsors, the Executive Committee, and the panel of multinational judges. He expressed confidence that with such strong support, Qatar Talks will continue to reach even greater heights in the years to come.
