The ongoing struggle for Palestinian freedom continues to be an emblem of resistance and decolonisation. While Gaza has been the focus for over a year, marked by destruction and death under Israeli aggression, the narrative has often been framed by Western media as starting only on October 7, 2023. However, referring to this as the “recent conflict” barely scratches the surface of a historical struggle that stretches over decades.
For many in the West, the Hamas attacks on October 7 were seen as the trigger for the current tensions. In reality, this conflict’s roots lie in decades of settler colonialism. Israel, with full backing from the West, has systematically controlled, displaced, and brutalized Palestinians. Their lands have been occupied, homes demolished, and lives reduced to trauma.
Yet, despite this overwhelming oppression, Palestinians have persisted. Their resistance against these colonial crimes stands as a powerful act of decolonisation. Whether through local resistance or international protests over the past year, decolonisation remains key to the ultimate goal of Palestinian freedom.
