SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 4 – Over 3,200 unionized Boeing workers across Missouri and Illinois began a strike on Monday after contract talks with the company ended without an agreement.
The workers, represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 837, had earlier voted to reject Boeing’s revised four-year labor contract. The decision came after a previous proposal was also turned down on July 27, just before the existing agreement expired at midnight.
The strike affects Boeing facilities in St. Louis and St. Charles, Missouri, and Mascoutah, Illinois.
“We will be out on the picket lines, making sure Boeing understands the strength of the workers’ voice,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant.
“These workers deserve a contract that provides security for their families and recognizes their expertise,” added IAM Midwest Territory Vice President Sam Cicinelli.
IAM General Vice President Jody Bennett emphasized the collective stand of the workers. “Solidarity is our power. This strike shows that workers can stand up to corporate pressure and demand a better future,” he said.
IAM is one of North America’s largest industrial trade unions, representing about 600,000 active and retired members in industries such as aerospace, defense, airlines, and healthcare.
Boeing expressed disappointment over the vote. Dan Gillian, Boeing’s Air Dominance Vice President and St. Louis site executive, said the company’s offer included an average 40 percent wage increase and addressed concerns about alternative work schedules.
He noted that Boeing had already activated its contingency plans and that non-striking employees would continue operations to support customers.
The strike reflects ongoing tensions in the U.S. labor market, as workers in multiple sectors push for better wages, conditions, and job security amid inflation and rising living costs.
