WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 – U.S. President Donald Trump met on Friday with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House, signaling a new, constructive tone after months of political tension.
Following their meeting, both leaders described the discussion as productive, focusing on strategies to improve the nation’s largest city. “The better he does, the happier I am,” Trump told reporters. Mamdani said he is “really looking forward” to tackling pressing issues, including housing affordability, in one of the country’s most expensive urban centers.
The cordial meeting marked a sharp departure from the animosity earlier this year. In July, Trump had threatened to have Mamdani arrested over federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations after Mamdani pledged to protect undocumented residents in New York.
Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election on Nov. 4, making history as the first Muslim mayor of the most populous U.S. city. The White House meeting emphasized the importance of cooperation and maintaining a professional, solution-focused relationship between federal and city leadership.
