U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Sunday, discussing ongoing efforts to reach a peace deal aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict. Trump described the talks as “excellent” and suggested that the two sides are “getting a lot closer, maybe very close” to an agreement.
Despite the optimistic tone, both leaders provided few details about the specifics of the negotiations. Zelensky noted that a 20-point peace framework is “90 percent” complete, while Trump indicated that agreements on Ukraine’s security guarantees could be close to 95 percent. The leaders acknowledged that “one or two very thorny issues” remain unresolved, though progress is being made.
During the meeting, Trump and Zelensky also held a joint call with key European leaders, including heads of NATO and the European Union. Zelensky indicated that Trump may host further talks in Washington in January, with teams working in the coming weeks to finalize outstanding matters.
Ahead of the Florida meeting, Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who agreed to the creation of two working groups focused on security and economic issues as part of the prospective peace deal. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the developments, emphasizing the need for strong security guarantees. French President Emmanuel Macron said that allied nations supporting Ukraine would meet in Paris next month to discuss these assurances.
While concrete breakthroughs have yet to be announced, leaders expressed cautious optimism that continued diplomatic engagement could pave the way toward a lasting resolution to the conflict.
